There are places we were never meant to go...
***
A woman searching for a sister lost at sea.
A man bent on finding lost treasure.
A mother who has lost all hope.
A maniac who believes all life exists for his pleasure.
The man who would keep them all safe.

Together, they will all seek below the waves for treasures long buried, and riches beyond belief. But those treasures hide something. Something ancient, something dark. A creature that exists only to feed on those that would enter into its realm. A creature... of The Deep.

I should have left this review a couple of weeks ago, but life got in the way. I loved this book. For the grammar conscious, I didn't notice any typos, extraneous punctuation marks, wrong words, wonky shift changes, etc. The story flowed without any odd moments where I felt the internal logic failed or where I thought characters were acting against their established personalities. The character development progressed naturally and well. There were two despicable people who filled villain roles nicely in addition to the good old fashioned monster. The other people ranged from people I would like as friends to the type you look at and think "Um, just not sure about you."

It was fun "watching" the characters deal with both the undersea and air-breathing menaces. I will admit this book hit a few of my fears. I have a phobia of deep water that ties into my phobia of being stuck in a place where the air supply is limited and/or easily cut off. Add in the claustrophobia, which was stirred up whenever the sunken shipwreck was mentioned, and this story hit me in a visceral, undeniable, delicious way.

The story started off with an ordinary trip to go deep sea diving, and segued into a life-or-death struggle with an ancient evil. There was a lovely romance, some heartbreaking moments, a few wonderful come-uppances, and some creepy, icky, and a few down-right frightening moments. I love horror, whether it's a good book, a well-done movie, a competent haunted house... horror is just a medium that I thoroughly enjoy (when it's well done). Mr. Collings is a master of horror. He has become an auto-buy for me. I know I can always count on him for a well-written, ably plotted, enjoyable trip into horrorville. I highly recommend this book. I think it's become my favorite Collings book, which is why I recommended it to a rabid reader friend who's opinion I value. Thanks for the great read and keep up the great work, Mr. Collings!

The Deep Michaelbrent Collings 9781515089636 Books Reviews

I thought this would be the normal run-of-the-mill see horror book, but I was wrong. This story seemed to racket up the tension the further one read into the story. The character characterization could have used more work because it’s unclear what the backstories were. The monster of the story was also unclear; yet, it seemed to have the ability to understand the wants of each human character. The ending was definitely different than I expected but it was still a good ending. I like this horror book and found it to be fairly scary.
Diving deep to 150 feet is dangerous. The pressure on your body is 4 times as great as at sea level, which turns oxygen into something dangerous to your body. Divers call this getting “narked”. It can make you see & do dangerous, even stupid things. To make matters worse you simply can’t make a mad dash for the surface if something goes wrong at that depth. If you try you will get “bent”. Nitrogen, normally inert at sea level, gathers & expands at your joints & if you go up without letting your body gradually disparate the nitrogen you will feel incredible pain that could result in death. If that was not enough, there is something much more dangerous waiting for the characters of “The Deep”. Horror has found a talented author in Michaelbrent Collins. Do yourself a favor and read this novel...but make sure you have lots of lights on.
The Deep contains scene after tense scene where the reader wonders if a character will live or die.

The writing takes getting used to as there are many large swaths of highly stylistic prose consisting of many incomplete sentences. It is almost stream of consciousness or writing where the punctuation marks fell off the page and someone picked them up and sprinkled them back on. Perhaps worse than that as they weren't randomly distributed. They appeared to be appropriately separate sentences or sentence fragments, but a perfectly good complete sentence would make no sense unless re parsed with the previous phrase. I had to reread sometimes to determine the meaning.
The style worked beautifully to create tension with short punctuated phrases, but less well in describing characters.

Characters were well developed but not necessarily believable.

Many great hooks came from characters' disbelief at discoveries kept from the reader.

My blood raced as I read. Yet I found myself chiding characters for their irrational actions, and had little empathy for them. Two were evil and/or insane. One was a greedy narcissist. One had an irrational obsession with her sister's death and a lifelong grudge against her father, and fell in love after a few days with the diving instructor on the boat, who was supposed to be the good guy, but was more like "the little engine that could" who must save idiots at all costs. Speaking of stream of consciousness.

My favorite kind of suspense novel gives the reader time to speculate about what is going on, and it all hangs together in the end. The Deep has many good moments where characters wondered if something moved or ? There seemed to be too many moving parts for coherent speculation and no "Ah ha!" ending.

Not my perfectly brewed cup of tea, but it thrilled me and I highly recommend for fans of hyper tense scenes
If you're tired of zombies and haunted houses, witches and things that go bump in the night, this is a good and thrilling horror novel for you. It's got a lot of deep sea diving, but you don't have to be a scuba enthusiast to enjoy it. The characters were a bit two-dimensional - each fitting into a particular slot. But they worked well into the story, and the plot moved along at a nice pace. I like the mystery that kept at the heart of it, and the impossible, chaotic and gory things that occurred to freak our minds. Really good horror. I've given out too many five star reviews, and this felt like a solid four stars. Highly recommended. I will look for more by Mr. Collings.
